"What to check in a Whirlpool 27" dryer when not tumbling"

Home Questions Useful Links

If your Whirlpool dryer is not tumbling properly, check the following parts below.

The belt:
The belt measures 93 inches in total length, has 4 ribs, and is 1/4" wide. The job of the belt is to keep the drum rotating during the complete cycle.

If the belt is stretched out, this could make it slip on the motor pulley and reduce the drum turning speed.

The drum support rollers:
The drum or tumbler rides on four drum support rollers, two on the front and two on the rear.

When the lubrication that was put on the rollers at the factory, dries out, the rollers center bearing wears out.

This will cause the the drum to be off center and the dryer starts to make noises and it slows down the drum speed.

The idler pulley:
The idler pulley is use to apply the necessary tension on the belt. This pulley consist of a metal bracket and a plastic wheel or a teflon slide.

The idler pulley with the teflon slide cause the dryer to be noisy and wear the belt much faster that the idler pulley with the roller on it.

A worn out idler pulley sometimes allows the belt to derail and
this could be the reason why the Whirlpool dryer is not tumbling properly.

The drum seals:
These type of dryer uses a front and rear drum seal. If the any of the seals becomes unglued from the drum it could get between the drum and the cabinet causing the drum from turning.
