Whirlpool washer is not agitating
Most Whirlpool & Kenmore washing machines use a dual action agitator. Dual action means that the agitator does two things at the same time.
The mover
The job of the clothes mover is to keep moving the clothes from the top down to the bottom part of the agitator.
If the washer fills to the selected level and the motor starts, but the top part
of the agitator is hardly moving or not moving at all, you will need to check
the agitator dogs or cogs.
Worn out agitator dogs or a bad pusher could be the reason why
your Whirlpool washer is not agitating.
If replacing the the agitator dogs doesn't correct the problem,
then you might need to replace the agitator pusher too.
The agitator
The bottom part of this assembly is the agitator. The agitator is the part that does the washing. It is made of hard plastic and it connects to the transmission shaft.
Inside of the agitator are some ridges called splines, these splines mate with the splines in the transmission shaft.
Overloading the washer sometimes cause the agitator splines to strip or the motor coupler to brake.
Motor Coupler
These are direct drive washers, meaning that there is no belt on
them. These washers use a motor coupler.
The motor coupler connects the motor to the transmission. A broken motor coupler
could be the cause why your Whirlpool washer is not agitating.
The most common reasons why the motor coupler breaks, is
overloading the washer, washing small rugs or big comforters.
