Taking Apart

The first thing you will need to learn to be able to easily repair your not starting Whirlpool 27 inch gas dryer is how to take it apart and how to put it back together again properly. Once you learn how to do that, the repairs will be very easy to do.

The Belt

A broken belt could be the reason why you have a not tumbling Whirlpool 27 inch gas dryer. Let say that you load the dryer with wet clothes and turn it on to dry the clothes. If when you check the clothes they are still wet, you need to check the tumbler driving belt to see if it is broken or stretched.

To check it do the following. Set the timer on the beginning of a drying cycle, open the dryer door and with one hand push in the door switch actuator to turn it on. Push the start switch to turn the motor. If the motor runs ok but the tumbler won’t turn, you need to check the belt.

Disconnect the dryer from the wall outlet. Remove the lint filter, and the 2 screws under the lint filter cover. Now open the top panel and lean it against the wall.

Look on top of the tumbler and grab the belt to see if it is broken, if it is broken you will need to replace it.

To replace it do the following. Remove the two 5/16 screws holding the front panel, Pull the front panel out to clean the front of the tumbler and lift the front panel to disengage it from the 2 holding hooks and remove it.

The Idler Pulley

If the problem with your Whirlpool 27 inch gas dryer is that is not tumbling properly or is making a lot of squeaking noises. The problem could be a bad idler pulley or idler pulley.

The typical idler pulley was made of a meta bracket and a roller. Since the roller turns with the belt, there is not much friction between the belt & the roller. The only problem with this type of idler assembly is that the plastic roller hole in the center wears out and the roller won't turn properly and makes noises.

They came up with a new design of idler assembly that eliminates the roller and uses a Teflon slide instead. The problem with this type of idler is that there is a lot of friction between the belt and the idler and after a while the dryer starts to make   squeaking noises.

When I encounter the idler pulley with the Teflon slide that is making noises, I always replace it with the idler with the roller instead.

Drum Support Rollers

Worn out drum rollers could be the reason why your Whirlpool 27 inch gas dryer is making rumbling noises.

The dryer uses 2 roller on the back panel that the drum or tumbler rides on top of it. With time and the amount of usage these rollers wear out ant he dryer starts to make noises. These noises starts small and get bigger as these parts wear out.To check and replace them you need to do the following.
