If your Performa top load washer by Maytag is not starting in any of the cycles that you tried it on, in other words the washer is dead.
You will need to check the following parts until you find out the part that needs to be replace to fix the washing machine.
Here I am going to give you a brief description of the parts you need to check, and below you will have the links to the pages with the videos that will show you how the repair is done.
The wall outlet: The first thing that you need to make sure, is that there is electricity in the outlet that the washer is connected to. The easier way to do that is by disconnecting the washer from the outlet and connecting a hair dryer that you know is in good working order on the outlet.
Turn the hair dryer on. If the hair dryer works, then the problem is in the washer. If the hair dryer doesn't work, then the problem could be on the fuse or circuit breaker box or on the wall outlet.
The power cord: The power cord transfers the electricity from the wall outlet to the washer timer. If one of the lines in the cord is open, electricity will not flow to the washer and the washer is not going to start.
The lid switch: This switch is a safety device use to prevent the motor in the washer from running if the door is open or if the switch is bad. There are 2 different door or lid switches in use, the old style and the newer style lid switch. You will learn how to check them both in the video links below.
Timer on/off switch: This switch is used to turn the timer on after you have selected the cycle that you want to run the washer on. This set of contacts inside of the timer are the ones that when the are close allows the electricity to flow to the timer and when they are opened, the washer is dead.
Motor overload switch: This switch is located in the motor and the purpose of this witch is to open when the windings in the motor get too hot and close when the windings cool down. If this switch stays opened, the washer is not going to do anything in other words the washer will not be starting.
