If your Performa top load washer by Maytag is not spinning

You will need to check the following parts until you find out the part that needs to be replace to fix the washing machine.

Here I am going to give you a brief description of the parts you need to check, and below you will have the links to the pages with the videos that will show you how the repair is done.

Door switch: If the problem with your Performa washer is that is not agitating, draining, or not spinning, the problem could be a bad door switch.

The door switch is a safety device used to open the circuit to the motor and stop it,  if the door is opened during any of the cycles.

When the user opens the washer during any of the cycles, the motor is turned off to prevent the user from getting injured. To see how to check & replace the door switch in a  Performa washer, view the video below

The belt: If the problem with your Performa washer is that the motor runs, but the washer won’t agitate, drain, or remove the water from the clothes. The problem could be a broken or worn out belt.

To check the belt the washer needs to be empty of water. Pull the washer forward and lean it against the wall so you could take a look under.

Now you could look under to see if the belt is broken or worn out. If the belt is broken or worn out, you should replace the belt and the motor pulley. To see how to check & replace the belt in a Performa washer, view the video below

Thrust bearing: If the problem with your Performa washer is that when the washer is on the spin cycle the motor runs, but the drum spins too slow or do not spinning at all. The problem could be a worn out thrust bearing.

This is how the thrust bearing supposed to works

When the washer is on the spin cycle, the motor & belt turns the transmission pulley counterclockwise

As the transmission pulley turns counterclockwise, it tighten all the parts of the thrust bearing

When the parts get tighten, the pulley pulls the transmission shaft compressing the brake spring and releasing the brake

When the brake is released, the transmission pulley turns the transmission and since the spin tub is attached to the transmission it will turn as well

And basically that is the way that the thrust bearing works, or at least the way that I could explain it. To see how to check & replace the thrust bearing in a Performa washer, view the video below

How the transmission works: If the problem with your Performa washer is that the motor runs, the belt turns ok, but the washer won’t wash the clothes or spin, then the problem could be a bad transmission. To see how to check the transmission in a Performa washer, view the video below

How to replace the transmission: If the problem with your Performa washer is that the motor runs, the belt turns ok, but the washer won’t agitate or spin, then the problem could be a bad transmission.

To replace the transmission you will need to remove the top and front panels. And remove the complete drum assembly with the transmission attached to it. It will be easier for you to learn how to do it by seeing how it is done. To see how to replace the transmission in a Performa washer, view the video below.
