Motor Switch
GE/Hotpoint electric dryer

If the problem with your GE Hotpoint electric or gas dryer is that is not starting or is not heating. The problem could be a bad motor switch.

When the motor is not running, the motor switch keeps the starting and running windings connected to the motor circuit. Once the motor starts running, the motor switch disconnect the starting winding, and only the running winding is left connected to the motor circuit.

This switch is also use to close and open the heating element circuit. When the motor is not running, the heating element circuit is open, and when the motor is running the circuit to the heating element is close.

As you could see, the motor switch has to be working correctly in order for the dryer to work properly.
