Igniter

Maytag Original Electric Dryer

If the problem with your Maytag gas dryer is that is not heating at all. The problem could be a bad igniter.

These igniters are made of silicon carbide and are very fragile and break easily. The job of these igniters is to ignite the gas when is released from the gas valve.

When the dryer calls for heat the igniter starts getting hot. When the igniter gets red hot, the heat from the igniter will heat up the contacts inside of the flame sensor until the contacts opened.

When the contacts on the flame sensor opened, the igniter is turn off and the gas valve opens to release the gas. As the gas passes by the still red hot igniter it ignites and that is the way that the gas dryer produces heat.
