A broken counter balance spring could be the cause why your Whirlpool made direct drive washer is making banging noise when the washer is on the spin cycle and leaking water when is on the filling cycle.
This spring is used to keep the complete tub and spin drum align in the center of the washer.
With time it gets rusted and breaks causing the drum to finish the spin cycle slanted to the front right of the washer. Other times the hole in the washer frame gets rusted and breaks leaving the spring hanging.
It is very easy to tell when it is broken or the hole that engage to is broken.
Simply open the door on your Whirlpool made direct drive washer and take a look at the tub and spin drum assembly. If it is slanted to the front right, you need to check to see if it is broken.
This is very easy to repair. Pull the washer forward and lean it against the wall. Make sure it is secure and is not going to fall on your head OK.
Look on the washer frame, you will see if the counter balance spring is broken or if the hole that connect to is broken.
If the spring is broken, remove it and install a new one. If the hole in the washer frame is broken take a drill and a drill bit a little bigger that 1/8 and drill a hole next to the broken one and connect the new spring.
Put the washer on its place and see if the tub and spin drum assembly stays on the middle now
