If your GE Hotpoint front serviceable washer is not agitating properly, in other words the washer fills with water, the motor runs but the agitator doesn't turn.
You will need to check the following parts until you find out the part that needs to be replace to fix the washing machine.
Here I am going to give you a brief description of the parts you need to check, and below you will have the links to the pages with the videos that will show you how the repair is done.
Taking apart: To fix a GE Hotpoint washer when is not working properly, the first thing that you need to learn before you try to fix it, is how to take it apart and how to put it back together properly. Once you know how to dismantle the washer, the repairs becomes easier to do.
If you need to check the timer, the water temperature switch, the water level switch, or the motor speed switch. You need just to open the controls panel. If you need to check the motor, the pump, the clutch, or the transmission. Then you need to open the controls panel and remove the top and front panels.
Agitator coupler: If the problem with your GE washer is that it fills with water to the selected level, the motor starts running, but will not agitate to wash the clothes. The problem could be a worn out coupler.
This washer uses a bell or coupler to hold the agitator in place. The coupler has splines that mate with the splines in the transmission shaft. When the user keeps overloading the washer, the splines in the coupler wear out and the shaft on the transmission is not able to turn the coupler and the agitator can’t agitate anymore.
The belt: If the problem with the washer is that it fills to the selected level, the motor starts running, but the agitator won’t move. The problem could be a bad or broken belt. To check the belt, disconnect the washer from the wall outlet.
Open the controls panel and take a look at the belt. If it is broken or stretched out, then you need to replace the belt with a new one.
The clutch: If the problem with your GE washer is that it fills with water to the selected level, the motor starts running, but the agitator will not move to wash the clothes.
The problem could be a worn out clutch. The clutch is used on the older washers, the newer motors use a pulley instead of a clutch
The motor: If your GE washer filled to the selected level, but the motor won’t start running to make the washer agitate, the problem could be a bad motor. The motor in your washer is the work horse of the machine. When the motor won’t run, the washer will not wash or spin.
Sometimes the motor could start running ok, and after 20 to 30 minutes the motor could overheat and stop running. It is hard to explained how to check & replace the motor with just words.
The transmission: If the problem with your GE washer is that is filling to the selected level, but is not agitating or spinning and the agitator coupler, the belt, the clutch and the motor are ok. The problem could be a bad transmission.
