The
job of the Whirlpool water pump is to remove
the water from the washing machine. The pump is
found below the water holding tank in the washing
machine. The reason that is below the tank is, that
this pump will only pump out the water when the
water flows to the impeller.
In other words the
pump is not a suction pump, it will not suck the water out of the washing
machine. In order for the pump to pump the water out of the washer, the water
has to flow to the impeller by centrifugal force.
The most common cause for the
washing machine not draining is, when something gets stuck inside the pump. The
items of clothing that get stuck in the pump usually are small socks,
handkerchiefs, ladies’ underwear, curtain ties, etc.
When this happens, water cannot
reach the impeller and the washing machine will not drain out the water.
Sometimes the obstructions could be coins, a screw, or a piece of wire. One easy
way to check to see if there is an obstruction in the pump is by doing this.
Remove the drain hose from the
drain pipe, put a bucket on the floor and lower the hose into the bucket and see
how much water starts coming down into the bucket. If the water drain out freely
there is no obstruction. If the water won’t drain out or if it only trickles
out, most likely there is an obstruction.
To check inside the pump for
obstructions, the first thing you need to do is to empty the water from the
washer machine. Next remove the Cabinet and the two hoses from the pump and
check inside. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to remove whatever is inside the
Whirlpool washer water pump.
You will need to look inside the
pump to make sure that the impeller is in good working order. Sometimes when a
coin or a piece of wire gets inside to pump it will mess up the impeller.
Without a good impeller the washing machine will not drain out the water.
