The Whirlpool washer gearcase (or
transmission) is the part that makes the washer
agitate or spin.
The motor is coupled to the
transmission with a motor coupler kit
The motor coupler kit consists of
three parts. One of the parts is made out of rubber,
and the other two parts are made out of hard
plastic.
When the motor runs clockwise it
turns the internal gears in the Whirlpool washer
gearcase and the washer agitates. When the
motor runs counterclockwise it only turns the clutch
and the washer spins.
There are some other parts that have
to be working properly for the washer to spin, like
the motor coupler, basket drive block and the clutch
If any of the gears inside break,
the washer will make noises and it will not spin
Now you will need to remove the
washer cabinet and check to see if the clutch is
turning during the spin cycle or not.
Replacing the gear case
or the clutch is an expensive job, if you have
to pay a repair company to do it.
The cheapest way to do it to go to
the city dump or get one of the washers that the
stores remove when people buy a new one.
I pick them up for $5.00 and
sometimes I pick them up free from peoples yards.
Remove the transmission and clutch
and fix your washer with them. It is like when you
go to the junkyard to get used auto parts.
Sometimes these parts are like new.
That is how the use appliance places fix the ones
that they sell.
