"How to check & replace the clutch in a Whirlpool direct drive
washing machine"

Home Questions Useful Links

The job of the Whirlpool washer clutch is to make the washer spin.

When the motor turns the gear case in a counterclockwise direction the brake is applied, and when it turns it on a clockwise direction the spin tube turns and the drum spins.

There are two sections on the clutch, the first one is the hard plastic piece attached to the brake and drive tube, and the other part is attached to the gear case.

So, in order for the washer to spin these two sections of  must be working properly.

Sometimes the user overloads the washer and the plastic piece in the brake and drive tube brakes, and the complaint is that the washer won't spin and is noisy.

If you ever have troubles with the clutch, you should buy a complete clutch replacement kit, replace the complete clutch.

If you have to call a repair company to have the Whirlpool and Kenmore direct drive washing machine clutch replaced, it will cost you over $150.

If you do it yourself you will save at least $100.
