Let me explain to you how the Whirlpool and
Kenmore direct drive washer agitator works.
Most Whirlpool & Kenmore washing machines use a
dual action agitator.
Dual action means that it does two things at the
same time.
The
mover: The
job of the clothes mover is to keep moving the
clothes from the top of the drum down to the bottom
part of spin drum.
This way the agitator will clean the dirt from
the clothes.
When the agitator dogs are worn out, the agitator
mover will not move (some times making noises) and
the clothes will not be washed properly leaving the
clothes on the top unwashed or full of soap.
When you feel that the clothes are not coming out
of the washer clean enough, check to make sure that
the agitator mover is working properly.
The
agitator:
The bottom part is the part that washes the clothes.
It is made of hard plastic and it connects to the
transmission shaft.
Inside of the agitator are some ridges called
splines, these splines mate with the splines in the
transmission shaft.
Overloading the washer sometimes cause the
agitator splines to strip or the motor coupler to
brake.
If the washer is filled to the proper level and
it starts to agitate, but the top part of the
agitator ( the clothes mover ) is not moving the
clothes to the bottom part of the agitator, check
for worn out agitator dogs.
