"What to check in a Whirlpool 29"
gas dryer when is not heating"

Home Questions Useful Links

When your Whirlpool made gas dryer is not heating, this is the procedure to follow to find out where the problem could be.

Set the timer on the regular timed cycle and turn the dryer on. Let it run for about 10 minutes.

Take a look through the peep hole or remove the bottom panel to see what is happening in the gas chamber.

If the igniter don't glow these are the parts that you will need to check.

The igniter: The igniter is the part that ignites the gas. To check the igniter you will need to take a reading between the two terminals on the igniter connecting plug.

The reading should be between 40 and 100 ohms. If the reading is infinity, the igniter is bad and must be replace. A broken igniter could be the reason why the dryer is not heating.

The flame sensor: The flame sensor is the switch that turns the igniter on and off. Broken terminals on the flame sensor are common reason for the Whirlpool dryer not heating.

The thermostats: You will need to check the operating thermostat and the hi-limit thermostat. The hi-limit thermostat is a safety device that will open the circuit to the gas valve if the air flow inside of the dryer is restricted. When the circuit to the gas valve coils is open the dryer will stop producing heat.

The timer: The timer is the distribution center in the dryer. It takes electricity from the terminal block and direct it to the different circuits in the dryer.

When you set the timer on any of the cycles that requires heat, the contacts of the terminals with the black & blue wires should be close. Burnt contacts inside of the timer could be the reason why your Whirlpool dryer is not heating.

The motor: The motor switch is a safety device use in the motor to prevent the dryer from heating when the motor is not running. When the motor gets to full speed, this switch closes allowing the heating circuit to be completed.

A bad motor switch could be the reason why your Whirlpool dryer is not heating.

The gas valve If the igniter glows but there is no flame, run the dryer for about 5 minutes. If the igniter keeps glowing and shutting off, but there is no flame, the problem could be on the gas valve or the gas valve coils.

So...as you could see, there are many parts that could be the reason why your dryer won't heat.
