not starting

Whirlpool dryer not starting

If the problem you are having is that your gas or electric Whirlpool made dryer is not starting, these are the parts you will need to check until you find and correct the problem.

The wall outlet:

The right voltage have to be present at the wall outlet for the dryer to be able to start. 240 volts for an electric dryer and 120 volts for a gas dryer.

The thermal fuse:

These electric dryers have a thermal fuse wired in series with the motor. If the thermal fuse is blown, that could the reason for your Whirlpool dryer not starting.

Timer contacts:

The timer is the distribution center in the dryer, the timer will send the right voltage to each of the individual parts in the dryer. Most common problem with the timer, is burnt contacts.

The motor:

The motor is in charge of turning the tumbler and the blower to circulate air inside of the dryer. The motor has a set of contacts that need to be closed for the heating element to produce heat. An open motor winding or an open motor overload protector switch could be the reason for your Whirlpool dryer not starting.

The belt switch:

The belt switch is located on the motor bracket and under the idler pulley. It is wired in series with the motor windings and it is turn on when the belt is around the tumbler. A broken belt could be why the Whirlpool dryer is not starting.

The door switch:

The door switch is a safety device use to prevent the dryer motor from starting or running when the door in the dryer is open. Burnt contacts or a broken actuator on the switch could be the reason that the Dryer is not starting.

Push to start switch:

The push to start switch could be a simple two wires switch or a more complex three wires relay switch. The two wires switch is a simple push switch. The three wires relay switch, uses an electromagnet relay to keep the switch on after is push to start the dryer.

The Cord:

Burnt terminals or wires on the terminal block could be the reason for your Whirlpool dryer not starting.

As you can see, if any one of these parts fails the dryer will not start.
