"What to check in a Whirlpool 29"
dryer when making noises"

Home Questions Useful Links

Is your Whirlpool electric or gas dryer making noises? Noises could come from anywhere, but if you listen, you should be able to find out what is making the noises.

The drum support rollers: These rollers are made of rubber with a softer metal bushing or bearing in the center.

They ride on a much harder metal shaft. The tumbler has a groove on it and it rides on top of the rollers.

These rollers are lubricate when the dryer is put together in the factory. After so many years or use, the metal bearing lubrication dries out.

The friction between the roller bearing and the shaft will cause the roller bearing to wear out.

Worn out drum support rollers could be the reason why your dryer is making noises.

The idler pulley: The Idler pulley is in charge or applying the necessary tension on the belt. It is made of spring metal and it uses a plastic wheel for the belt to ride on it.

On the newer dryer they change the design on the pulley and replace the wheel with a Teflon glide.

The idler pulley with the wheel on it, is a better design because there is no friction on the belt. On the idler pulley with the Teflon glide there is a lot of friction between the Teflon and the belt. This friction could be the reason why the dryer is noisy.

The belt: The belt is about 93 inches long by 1/4 of an inch wide and its job is to turn the tumbler. The belt is made of rubber with other fibers mix in. With the continued use and the heat from the heating element, the belt will eventually stretch out a little bit.

When the belt stretches out, it will slip on the tumbler and this could be why your Whirlpool dryer is making noises.

The blower wheel: The blower wheel is attached to the motor, it turns when the motor turns. The job of the blower is to circulate air through the dryer to dry the clothes. You need to be careful when you remove the lint filter, because if anything fall down filter chute, it will fall on top of the blower.

Items falling through the lint filter chute and winding up on the blower wheel, could be why the Whirlpool dryer is making noises.

The motor: The bearings on the motor, a derailed belt, something falling inside of the motor could cause noises in the dryer.

The drum baffles: Loose tumbler baffles, coins inside of the baffles and metal items could also cause noises in the dryer.

Like I said before, there could be many things that could be the reason why your Whirlpool dryer is making noises.
