What to check in a Maytag top load washer when not agitating"

Home Questions Useful Links

When the problem you are having is that your Maytag washer is not agitating properly or not agitating at all, check the following parts until you find the problem.

The lid or door switch:  If the washer fills with water to the selected level, then, nothing happens. Check the lid switch assembly to make sure that the switch is operating properly.

If the washer fills to the selected level, you hear the motor running, but your washer is not agitating, check for a broken belt, oil leaking from the transmission into the belts, dry springs and glides not allowing the motor plates to give the belts the proper tension, or a bad transmission.

The belt :  A belt usually brakes when the washer is overloaded most of the times. On this Maytag washer the drive belt will slip during the beginning of the spin or wash cycles. This action will wear the belts faster.

If your washer drive belt is worn out and stretched, this could be the reason why your washer is not agitating.

The motor :  The motor is a very important part in the your washer. A motor that is overheating could be why your Maytag washer is not agitating. When the motor overheats, it turns off a small switch that is connected in series with the motor windings.

The symptom of an overheating motor is, that it will run for some time and when it gets hot it will stop running until the switch in the windings cools down and resets to the on position.

Oil leak :  When the transmission leaks oil, the oil will soak the belts causing poor agitation and spin and eventually the drive belt will burn out.

If the oil leak is not too big, you can use a grease cleaner to clean the oil from the pulleys and belts. This procedure gets the washer working properly again for some time.

The transmission :  The transmission could be the problem why your washer is not agitating. When the motor turns the transmission pulley counterclockwise the washer will agitate and when it turns it clockwise the washer will spin.

Some times the gears inside of the transmission will brake and jammed the transmission. When this happens, the solution is to replace the transmission.

Replacing the transmission is a costly repair, but we have step by step video clips on how to do it if you want to do it.
