What to check in a Maytag top load washer when not filling properly"

Home Questions Useful Links

When your Maytag top load washing machine is not filling at all, only fills with hot water or only fills with cold water. Check the following parts until you find what part is causing the problem.

The water valve filters:  The first thing you need to do, is to make sure that there is water up to the water mixing valve. Next check the water valve screen filters to make sure that they are clean.

The screen filters job is to keep sediment from getting inside of the washer.

Some times, specially if you are using well water, the screen filters get clogged preventing water to pass through the water mixing valve, this could be the cause for the washing machine not filling.

The water mixing valve :  The water mixing valve has two solenoids that are use to open and close the hot and cold water ports. If any of the solenoids burns out, the water valve will need to be replace as a complete assembly.

The water temperature switch :  The water temperature switch is what you use to select what water you want to use in the washer (hot, cold, or warm) to do the laundry. On a typical three temperature switch, you have contacts 7T - 3 - 4.

The wire on terminal 7T is the one that supply electricity from the timer. When terminal 7T make contact with terminal 3, you suppose to get cold water.

When terminal 7T makes contact with terminal 4, you suppose to get hot water.

When terminal 7T makes contact with terminals 3 & 4, you suppose to get warm water. A bad switch could be the cause for the Maytag top load washing machine not filling.

The water level switch :  The water level switch (or pressure switch) is the part that controls how much water goes in to the washer tub.

The water level switch use a hose that is connected to the air dome in side of the tank.

Let me explain how it works. The switch is a single pole double throw switch. There are three terminals in the switch, 7 - 15 - 16.

Electricity travels from the timer to the water temperature switch, then to the water mixing valve solenoids, then to the water level switch to terminal 15.

When the washer is empty contact 7 and contact 15 are close, this completes the filling circuit. When the washer is full of water contact 7 and 16 are close, breaking the filling circuit.

Burnt contacts in the water level switch could be the cause for the Maytag top load washing machine not filling.
