"What to check in a GE washer when not draining

Home Questions Useful Links

When the problem you are having is that your GE washer is not draining, these are the procedures to follow to find the problem and correct it.

The pump:  Remove the front panel and set the timer in the spin cycle and pull the knob to turn the timer on. Open the washer door and listen to the pump to hear if it is running, making a humming noise, or the pump is not do anything at all.

If the pump sounds like it is running, but the washer is not draining, you will need to check for an obstruction anywhere before the pump. It could be in the tub or the hose before the pump.

An obstruction could be the reason why your washer is not draining.

If the pump makes a humming noise, check for an obstruction inside of the pump that is preventing the pump impeller from turning. Also the pump bearings could be worn out and instead of the motor turning, it could be frozen in place.

If the pump won't do anything, and you don't hear any sound coming from the pump, you will need to check the pump motor winding for continuity to see if this is the cause why the GE washer is not draining.

Make sure that the washer is disconnected from the wall outlet before proceeding. Disconnect the pump wires and take a reading with your ohms meter, the reading should be between 5 and 10 ohms.

If the needle in your meter doesn't move, meaning that the reading is infinity, the pump is bad and must be replace. That could be the reason that your is not draining.

To replace the pump, you will need to disconnect the wires, remove the hoses, and unscrew the two pump holding screws.
