"What to check in a GE washer when making noises

Home Questions Useful Links

There are many parts that could cause the GE washer to be noisy. You will have to check and see which one is making the noise.

The damping straps :  The washer use four damping straps, this straps are made of rubber and are position between the tub cover and the washer cabinet.

The job of these straps is to keep the tub in the center of the cabinet.

Broken damping straps could be the reason why your GE washer making noises.

The clutch:  This washer uses a single speed clutch on the motor to drive the belt. The clutch is located on the motor shaft.

It is a very simple clutch consisting of two shoes and the clutch drum.

When the motor starts, the clutch slips a little until the motor is at full speed spreading the shoes and turning the clutch drum. Worn out clutch shoes could be the why your washer is making noises.

The newer GE washers don't use a clutch anymore, they use a pulley press into the motor shaft.

The pump:  An object falling into the pump impeller, or worn out pump bearings could also make noises when you use the washer.

Off balance load:  One of the biggest cause of noises in the washer is off balance loads.

Most washers are in the baseman and the user puts the clothes in the washer and go upstairs to do something else until the laundry is done.

If the load go off balance, the user will not know until the washer is banging all over the place.

The washer uses the damping straps to help keep the drum in the middle of the washer, but if the load is really uneven, the drum will hit the cabinet. So, an off balance load could be the reason that your washer is making noises.

Rod & Spring assembly:  The washer uses four rods & springs to support the complete drum, transmission, and motor assembly.

These rods & springs are located from the four corners on top of the cabinet to the base on the drum assembly.

Sometimes one of these spring & rod assemblies breaks down, causing the drum assembly to be slanted to the side instead of been in the center.

These will cause the washer to make big noises when the washer is turn on.

There are many places that the washer could develop noises from.

Listen and make a note of where in the cycle is the washer making noises.

This will make it easier to find out why your GE washer is making noises.
