If the problem with your GE-Hotpoint electric dryer is that you can't get it to start in any of the cycles that you try it on, you will need to check the following parts until you find the part that is preventing the dryer from starting.
Voltages at the terminal block:
In order for the dryer to be able to start, there have to be the right voltages at the terminal block.
You will need to really know how to use a multimeter to read AC volts at the terminal block. This test is a live one and if you don't know how to read AC volts, you could get hurt. So please, if you don't know how to do it, don't do it.
The thermo hi-limit right:
The thermo hi-limit thermostat is a safety device use to stop the motor from running if the heat in the heater shroud gets higher than it supposed to be. It is like a fuse and when it blows out you will need to replace it.
The start switch:
The start switch is a momentary switch use to start the motor. Once the motor starts, the start switch is out of the motor circuit. But if the start switch is bad, your GE-Hotpoint electric dryer will not start.
The idler spring switch:
The idler spring switch is activated by the idler spring when the belt is not broken. When the belt breaks, there is no tension on the idler pulley and the switch is turn off.
When the belt breaks off, the symptom is that the dryer motor starts running when you turn the switch to the start position, but it turns off when you let go of the switch.
The door switch:
The door switch is a safety switch use to stop the dryer motor from running if the door is open during a cycle. So, a broken door switch is
similar to having the door open.
The motor: A bad motor will also prevent the dryer from starting. A burned out motor will smell like burn rubber. Sometimes the problem could be a bad motor switch.
Well as you could see there many parts that could be the reason why your GE-Hotpoint electric dryer is not starting.
